Susie Jacobs

Short Biography

Susie Jacobs teaches sociology and global studies in the Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University. She holds postgraduate qualifications in anthropology and sociology from the London School of Economics. Her DPhil, from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, researched gender relations and land reform in Zimbabwe; it was one of the earliest studies of gender and land issues in the region. She has continued to research gender and land issues comparatively, including in South Africa. Her book Gender and Agrarian Reforms (Routledge) compares types of land and agrarian reform and their gendered effect in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America; it is forthcoming in September 2009. Jacobs has also researched gender and violent conflicts, transnational women’s movements, gender and livelihoods and ‘race’ and ethnicity, particularly in higher education. She has published articles recently in Journal of International Development, Journal of International Women’s Studies, Journal of Workplace Rights, Journal of Interdiscplinary Gender Studies (Australia) and Race, Ethnicity and Education. She recently led a study of ethnicity, gender and degree attainment in England for the Higher Education Academy. She is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Religions and Theology, University of Manchester.
